Odd Year Regatta
Thursday 30th July-Sunday 2nd August 2009
Six Atlantic Challenge Gigs At Antrim
The wild weather failed to dampen the spirits of the young people taking part in the Odd Year Regatta at Antrim Boat Club on Lough Neagh. Four days of sailing, rowing and training allowed around 85 young people to experience the challenges of managing the 38ft wooden gigs. Off the water new friendships were made between the crews from Russia, Wales, Finland, Scotland, Cork, Bantry and our own local crew from the Antrim and Ballyclare areas.
Gigs battled with the fresh to strong winds on the first days. Rowing time trials took place in the Six Mile Water and when conditions became too severe crews undertook the Jack Stay Transfer (transferring goods from the gig to the shore using a rope). Sunday turned out to be the best sailing day allowing four races to be held. Northern Ireland’s gig Harmonie displayed superb seamanship.
“We are all pleased to be a part of such perfect event. As a coxswain of International Crew’08 I was happy to see my friends once again at their homeland. A few days like these help us to understand each other much better than months of distant communications. We appreciate our hosts for hospitality and perfect cultural program provided for us. We’re looking forward to see all of you in a couple of years in St. Petersburg for the similar Competitions.” - said Alexander Belous, team leader of Russian crew.
This was the biggest home countries event to be held in the organisations history and Atlantic Challenge Northern Ireland are delighted that crew travelled from so far away to attend. ACNI would like to thank the staff and management of The Forum Eatery for the wonderful catering. Also Pattersons butchers Randalstown, Homebase and Tesco for their help with the BBQ.
